He
further introduced us to improvised materials. These materials are few tools
which can be made at home using empty cardboard boxes, PVC pipes, spiral
notebooks, tongue cleaners etc. They are cost effective and can be recreated
according to the needs of a child to be intervened and given remediation. Next
level of the training was an activity.
8 different Groups were formed and each group
were assigned with a material and was instructed to evaluate the case based on
few questions:
1)
What is the content of this material ?
2)
Can you use this for remediation or intervention ?
3)
If useful which area dealt with this book ?
4)
How this book/ material is useful for remediation and intervention ?
5)
How is the content arranged/organised to acquire skills?
6)
What are the innovative ideas/adaptable strategies used in this material for
children with disabilities?.
7)
What are the limitations/strength of this material when using for children with
SLD ?
8)
How can we supplement other materials/activities along with this?
Each
group covered areas related to mathematics. The first and second group covered
basic mathematics. The remaining 3rd to 8th group covered Mental
Math 1 2 3 4 5 levels respectively and the 8th Group dealt with numeracy.
By 11:45
a.m. Mrs Prashanthini and Mrs Ramya resumed maths class. We were introduced to
Racks and Tubes. This tool is used for division along with writing the problem and solving. Both of them
demonstrated solving division problems
using Rack and tubes.
Picture 1 : Racks and Tubes
Our second session was introduction to English learning and intervention activities and Apparatus.
(Note: prior to this learning it must be made sure that the child should develop pre -writing skills and hence few tools/Apparatus are used). such as:
a) Drawing insets or Metal Insets
Picture
2 : Drawing insets or Metal Insets
Once the
child has acquired Pre writing skill, he is introduced to vowels initially as a
part of writing. Vowels (in blue colour) and Consonants (in pink colour)
The
striking part here is letters are not in normal writing. It is in cursives.
(Note
-after acquiring phonological knowledge and awareness, the child is introduced
to cursive writing. The importance of cursive over normal writing is it
enhances fine movement wrist movement with Precision and fine Motor skills.
Here the child is made to run his two fingers (index and Middle) on the
Sandpaper letters.
The next level introduced to a child is Movable Alphabet Box
Picture 3 : Movable Alphabet Box
This box
consists of few envelopes, compartments and Rows. The topmost row contains
letters with vowels ( in blue colour ) the bottom rows with various
compartments consists of consonants (in pink colour) Each compartment has 5 to
6 letters. Here the child is asked to Pick a picture from an envelope. And he
is further instructed to create a word
using the picture chosen. For example “bag”.
Now, he is asked to spell using phonetics. that is first sound second sound and
third. And finally instructed to pronounce the word joining the letters from
this box.
(Note: Here, The 3 letter word should be
very familiar to the child CVC words are first taught.)
Diphthongs are introduced in the next step,
Diphthong is a sound formed by the combination of two single letters with different phonemes forming a new sound word. That is sh, oi, gh, ou etc.(Fish, Coin , enough, loud) One of the most interesting part of the session was introduction to parts of speech. How a child is taken to next level by introducing Verb, Noun, Article, Adjective, Pronoun, Preposition Conjunction,Iinterjection. A child is first given few symbols representing Verb, Noun, Article etc. These symbols are of various shapes sizes and colour representing each part of a sentence. This mode of representation helps child form a correct pattern of meaningful sentence & grammar
