CONDUCTING AN ASSESSMENT CAMP

A screening camp is conducted as part of the CMLD  course to give training in identifying the studens with a need for assessment and intervention.

NEED FOR EARLY INTERVENTION

According to a study published in the Journal of Pediatrics in November 2015 , students with learning difficulties often fall into a long term ‘learning gap’ that persists into adolescence. The authors warn that this “achievement gap poses serious consequences…including lower rates of high school graduation, higher levels of unemployment, and lower earnings…”

It shows that learning difficulties have cumulative effects – hurting academic achievement and emotional and behavioural development, year after year which severely impacts children’s enjoyment of school and motivation to learn.

And this can lead to low self-esteem, anxiety, or even depression. But it doesn’t have to be this way.The evidences from real life (watch the film THAARE ZEMIN PER ) clearly states the following :

The EARLIER learning difficulties are identified and an effective intervention program is started, the BETTER the chance of improving long term outcomes.

Early intervention helps to reduce the ‘learning gap’ before the problems become more profound and entrenched.

In fact, research shows that when the right help and learning strategies are put in place early enough, positive results can be quickly achieved and maintained over the long term.

As well as helping school performance, early action also reduces emotional problems associated with failure.

And intervention during primary school also helps prevent the development of further learning difficulties, such as writing problems, in later years.

This is the importance of an assessment camp on learning difficulties which paves way for early identification and opens up a possibility of follow up activities for remediation including accommodations and modifications.

EVALUATION OF THE CAMP

The KARUTHAL 2020 (CARE) one day screening and awareness camp was conducted on 8th FEBRUARY 2019 at BEM LP SCHOOL, Taliparamba(Kannur).

Registration process started at 9.00AM itself. The camp started at 10 ‘O’ Clock itself .Eminent personalities were invited for the day. Smt Hafsath.K , councillor of Taliparamba Town Ward and the standing committee Chairperson(PWD) Taliparamba Municipal Corporation inaugurated the meeting. Her speech was  inspirational for all including children, parents and our team members. Mr James P L, Head Master, BEM LP SCHOOL Taliparamba presided over the meeting. The other dignitaries who felicitated the gathering were Smt Mumthas C K,the President of the PTA , BEM LP SCHOOL Taliparamba and Smt.Raseena U V , the President of the mother PTA , BEM LP SCHOOL , Taliparamba. The Welcome Speech was delivered by Smt. Bindu . P.A , and Vote of Thanks by Smt. Farseena K.T, both of them members of this group .

A Very informative awareness class was given to the parents by Smt Soumya E and Smt. Lemees K P, both of them members of our group,KARUTHAL 2020

All the parents were motivated and thus they took full interest and involvement in assessing their children and clearing their doubts regarding academic performance of their children, developing social and emotional maturity and about behaviour modification techniques. Hence the assessment and evaluation was done successfully.

At the beginning of the screening, the students were given group activities in which all the students participated with great interest and enthusiasm.

The types of cases that arrived in the camp were unique in their own way. After the assessment and screening parents were given individual counselling.

40 students had registered for the event out of which 36 were assessed in detail.4 students were primarily found not to have any deficit in learning abilities. Students and parents actively participated in the programme. This opportunity helped the parents and it was also a great experience and lesson for us as the students of CMLD Course conducted by SRC Study Centre, Taliparamba.

After the camp, the parents and students were given follow up activities, counselling, educational support and all other possible help. We are grateful for the opportunity that was given to us.

Refreshments were arranged to make sure that everyone had a pleasant experience during the camp hours.

CONCLUSION

The camp ended successfully by creating an awareness among the parents about various issues and strategies of managing learning disabilities. LD is not a disease and so there is no cure. But there are ways to overcome the challenges it poses through remediation. The report contains two case studies from two different schools .The families of the students provided full support and the headmaster of the school rendered efficient guidance to complete the task. It was a tremendous learning process and a useful practical experience .The camp provided a professional platform to experience the process of assessing learning disabilities and it was done in a satisfactory manner.
