WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN SLOW LEARNERS AND STUDENTS WITH Specific Learnng Disorder ?
SLOW LEARNERS and Students with Learning Disorders are entirely different.
Slow learners are of IQ in the average or near average range.( 70 -90) . They don't perform in a level or speed as expected from their age group in a normal classroom situation during curriculum transaction in the areas of reading ,writing, comprehension and in subjects like maths.
A slow learner has the ability to learn academic skills but at a rate and depth below average same age peers.In order to grasp a new concept, a slow learner needs more time , more repetition and often more resources from teachers to be successful.They usually have delayed reasoning skills which makes learning new concepts difficult to learn.But a slow learner does not have any learning disorder.They are not entitled for special education services.(click here to read more about slow learners....)

A student with learning disorder has descrepancies in one or more basic psychological processes involved in using or understanding language written or spoken. These descrepancies may manifest themselves as an imperfect ability to LISTEN , SPEAK , READ , WRITE , SPELL or to DO MATHEMATICAL CALCULATIONS.
Any such learning problems arising out of visual / motor/ hearing impairment, emotional disturbances , mental retardation , economical ,cultural or ecological disadvantage are not diagnosed as specific learning disorders.(SLD)
There can be comorbidities such as hyperattention, inattention (ADHD / AD /....) along with a learning disorder which may create discipline issues to teachers in a classroom situation.
A learning disorder is not a mental illenss . It is a brain wiring issue.
A student with learning disorder will have average or above average IQ , generally 90-110.
She / he will generally have unusual strengths in some creative areas like music/painting/ spatial calculations./.....
A student with learning disorder is entitled to have special education servies along with inclusive education in India as per RPwD ACT 2016 .
A learning discrepancy can be a comorbidity along with other disorders of differently abled persons but it is not termed as a specific learning disorder.(SLD)
A student with Specific Learning Disorder needs early identification,intervention education and life long support with accomodations and modifications.
